Reservoir simulation models are by their nature integrated models as they consolidate interpretation and modelling from many disciplines. They are widely used tools for reservoir management, helping answer a wide range of key questions such as "How much reserves are remaining?", "Where is the best location for the next well?", and "How long can we maintain the plateau?".

But they are often also extremely complex, with dozens and sometimes hundreds of parameters representing reservoir behaviour, all of which have a degree of uncertainty associated with them. As a result they almost always give multiple solutions to any question posed of them. Engineers using manual workflows usually only find one solution, but a range of solutions can give considerably more information about the range of possible scenarios that may exist in reality.
